Technology in my Learning Journey

Technology has always been in my schooling. It started in the computer lab then chrome books and tablets. I mainly grew up learning in a computer lab in elementary school. Once I was in junior high and high school, we primarily used Chromebook because we needed to type out our assignments as an option for others who did not like handwriting.

Differences with the New Generation of Learning

The main difference I see in today’s elementary school compared to my early learning of technology is the abundance of technology. I remember they did not let us use laptops in early elementary education because we needed to practice typing on a keypad. We had a program where we needed to write a certain about of words per minute and read quickly enough to use it in comprehension. At the school I went to in the United States they used Alpha Smart keyboards which I described above about the program we used for typing. Once I moved to Canada in 2011, I primarily learned in the computer lab once a week in computer class. We learned how to use excel for postcards and how to write using Microsoft word. In grade six we learned how to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create slideshows in the future in junior high.

Comparing Experiences with Technology

To compare my experiences with the class this week was amazing how far technology has come and the accessibility in the classroom to have tablets and Chromebook available for students to learn how to type and use a laptop without a mouse. I did not think it would be hard motor skill to learn because of the children’s generation with technology. I could tell all the children were more comfortable with the tablets because I assume most children have a device like that at home.

The technology structures in place at schools now is around the same expectations of learning core subject matter like math or english but they are learning more abiut the subject matter with the abundance of technology in school and for most students at home.
