What is it?

It is a framework of teaching discussed in a previous week’s 2 and 4. Placed based learning is a Pedagogical practice to teach in an outdoor classroom. most environments include a garden, log circles, and if available it can be a forest or community outdoor space like the community forest in Cranbrook.

Through these practices students and teachers will learn through solving community-based problems in their environment. This can be explored through critical thinking and inquiry projects with the students learning.

How to incorporate it into the classroom learning

This type of learning can be incorporated into a traditional classroom by connecting to the community and learning communication skills. It can take place in a outdoor setting wither it is in a rock circle on school grounds or a forested area like the community forest in Cranbrook for students to learn in a different environment. It can start by taking a class outside to learning course work like food chains, Indigenous history, math equations in a real-world setting.

Social Studies

How to incorporate social studies into the classroom is by learning outside and going on historical field trips like a museum or a town like Fort Steele to learn all perspectives of history. As well to learn about the Indigenous peoples in the area to learn their perspective and to incorporate their ways of learning into your classroom. This can be in an outdoor classroom or on a field trip. if the teacher knows there is more history through different perspectives teach it towards the children. It is important to learn where they are and why they are privileged to live in the area.
